How do I create a USI (unique student identifier)?

Creating a USI can be one of the biggest bottlenecks for a student just starting their learning journey

Your Unique Student Identifier (USI) is your personal alphanumeric education identifier. It is required for all nationally recognised study in Australia, including university and vocational education and training (VET). Once you have a USI, it stays with you for life and can be used for your ongoing study and training.

Why you need a USI

You need a USI if you are:

  • studying nationally recognised vocational education and training (VET)
  • seeking a VET student loan
  • a higher education student seeking Commonwealth financial assistance e.g. HELP loan  or enrolling in a Commonwealth Supported Place
  • a higher education student graduating.

Having a USI helps ensure your study records can be recorded correctly and linked to your achievements. It is an important requirement for students completing eligible training or higher education in Australia.

Applying for your USI

Visit the USI website to apply for your USI

*you may need some forms of ID to apply

Applying for a USI is a straightforward process. You can apply online through the official USI website. Before you begin, make sure you have your personal details ready and allow enough time to complete the application carefully.

When applying, you may be asked to provide forms of identification to confirm your identity. Preparing these documents in advance can help make the process faster and easier.

It is important to ensure the details you provide match your identification documents exactly. This can help avoid delays or issues with your application.

If you do not yet have a USI, we encourage you to apply as soon as possible so your enrolment, financial assistance, or graduation requirements can be processed without interruption.
